Here's what we are doing in the month of december: In Denmark, it is quite common that parents make a 'gift' calendar for their kids from the 1st to the 24st of December (24st being the day when we celebrate Christmas). Last year my parents insisted that the kids should have one - I'd hoped to wait a few years, but since they insisted on paying, I made one. It takes time, and it can be expensive. I purchased stockings to avoid having to wrap 2 x 24 gifts (yes, lazy, I know, but whatever works..). Every morning, Santa brought a gift!
This year, since the kids are a bit bigger, we'll do other things, as excursions to Scripps Aquarium, ginger-bread baking etc.. (I've told them that Santa doesn't bring gifts to babies. Lucia is definitely too small!!). That will be fun things to do as a family and we'll have lesscrap stuff from dollar tree, oriental trading company etc. lying around the house. Some stuff, however, is perfect for making Christmas ornaments or gifts (paint canvas, decorate bulbs, make necklaces & bracelets, etc..)
The first 7 days..
1st Making 'juledekorationer' ('Christmas decorations' - a Danish custom, where you use a lump of clay, put in pine twigs, and small elfs/bells/pretty cones, plastic mushrooms etc, etc. - In the middle will be a candle. Both this and last year we used oasis instead of clay (I couldn't find clay) and plastic pine twigs instead of the real ones - San Diego being so warm I wouldn't want the needles all over by the 10th of December...
2nd. Christmas books: Silke got Fancy Nancy: a splendiferous Christmas and Eric got Llama Llama, holiday drama.
3rd .Beads. Silke got iridescent heart beads and Eric got metallic star beads.
4rd Books: Pinkalicious ' Merry Pinkmas ' and 'Pete the cat saves Christmas'. Eric: 'Curious George builds an igloo and 'a pirates 12 days of Christmas'.
5th growing crystals. I put a sponge in each their socks and we talked about the recipe and made it in the morning. This is how it looks on day 3- retrospectively, I should have cut the sponge into smaller pieces to create a more 'crystal-like' look and better growth conditions for the crystals. Will do that next time.
This is how it looks after a couple of days (as said, a rugged surface would have been better)
6th: Books: 'Snowmen at work' for Silke and 'Snowman magic' for Eric.
7th.. gingerbread making. Since I only had hearts and gingerbread-men shapes, I purchased a set on amazon with a 18 different shapes:. We made a huge batch since I'd arranged for both my mom's clubs (American one in the morning, international on in the afternoon) to come by for gingerbread decorating the following week.. Both kids got to decorate and eat a few, to try it out. That same day, they also got to go to our local library to participate in gingerbread-house making. The library purchased the houses, and every kid had to bring something to decorate them with.
8th Tickets to the cinema & a bag of popcorn - we all went to see the new Disney movie Frozen. The kids loved it!
.. and I know, it seems like a lot of books for the first week - but we all love books, and all of these were winter and Christmas-themed books, so I wanted us to be able to read them during December!
